Synopsis
The Bråten family live in an apartment bloc in Oslo, where the father, mother and five children (three boys and two girls) are crammed into a kitchen and one other room. Erik, the eldest of the children, is 18. Next oldest is Maiken, who has just turned 16. 14-year-old Sverre is friends with a neighbour boy, Olaf, whose step mother wants to put him in an institution and who is unkindly treated by his half-brother, Willy. The next oldest Bråten child is Vesla, and the youngest is Roy (7). The plot revolves mainly around the headstrong Maiken, who is encouraged by her closest friend to leave her family, and Sverre, who is taken to the police station along with Olaf and Willy for making off with, and trashing, a car, but whose sense of justice, and kindness towards the more emotionally vulnerable Olaf, leads him to confront Willy.
A Danish remake of this film entitled Altid ballade (Eng. Nothing But Trouble, lit. 'Always Trouble') was released in 1955.
