THE MOVING PICTURE BOY ARCHIVE
HISTORIA ZÓLTEJ CIZEMKI

Title: Historia żółtej ciżemki
English translation of title: The Story of the Yellow Shoe
Year of Release: 1961
Director: Sylwester Chęciński
Country of Production: Poland
Principal Boy Actor: Marek Kondrat (as Wawrzek, pronounced varv-jek, j soft as in French je, stress on first syllable)
Genre: Historical drama
Length: 1 hr 25 min
Language: Polish
Availability: The official Polish DVD release was unfortunately not remastered, and the colours in the film had deteriorated. The original film was characterised by a beautiful palette of clear primary colours, adding to the 'fairy tale' feel of the movie. When one compares the Polish release with the remastered version the difference is very marked indeed. Basically, the official Polish release is useless. The remastered version was released in Germany with a German dub, but the DVD does not include the original Polish audio. The remastered version with the original Polish audio can be viewed on Dailymotion here, though the picture quality is not quite as good as the German DVD.
English subtitles: available from opensubtitles.org (the subtitle file uploaded by 'diogenes' is the most accurate and complete, but is synced with the Polish DVD and needs to be resynced for the remastered version.)
Synopsis
Wawrzek runs away from home and makes his way to Cracow, where he realises his artistic talent by being taken under the wing of master sculptor Wit Stwosz whilst the latter is working on his masterpiece, the Altar of St. Mary's Church. A classic of Polish cinema.
